Ogoni Day: A Legacy of Peaceful Mobilisation and Environmental Rights
Ogoni Day is commemorated on 4 January in remembrance of the landmark peaceful mass mobilisation of 4 January 1993. Hundreds of thousands of Ogoni people took part in demonstrations calling attention to environmental degradation, community rights and the need for accountable resource governance.
The event built upon the Ogoni Bill of Rights, adopted in August 1990 and presented to Nigeria’s government in 1990. The Bill articulated demands for meaningful representation, fair access to economic resources, protection of Ogoni culture and the right to safeguard the environment.
The 1993 mobilisation brought the Ogoni struggle to wider national and international attention and helped establish 4 January as an enduring day of collective remembrance and peaceful civic action.
AIMRECA marks the occasion by affirming the importance of environmental education, community participation, sustainable livelihoods and responsible management of natural resources.
